Schopenhauer was a fairly morbid character with a pretty “disenchanted” view of life. He once kicked a little old lady downstairs, injuring her, because he said she was noisy. (IIRC, I picked this delightful snippet up from John Gray’s “Straw Dogs”)

He had to pay her a monthly allowance, as a result, and when he heard she’d died he wrote: “Obit anus, abit onus” (The old woman dies, the burden is lifted).

I think Ira Gershwin had him down right in the song lyric:

My evenings were sour/Spent with Schopenhauer

Hmmm. I think I’ll give that one a miss..

In other news, I ‘ve finished Boris’ book – seventy two virgins, and was very glad that black rod was there to protect us all at the end. I’d like to see it as a film. Obviously Boris would play the part of Roger (although I could see John Cleese in that role too), and Bush would play himself (without any stunt-men), The possibilities are endless!
